School Nutrition Programs to Promote Healthy Eating

Overview

School nutrition programs can incorporate one single modification (e.g., banning all sugar-sweetened beverages from campus) or consist of a multi-pronged approach to enhance nutrition for students as well as for faculty and staff (e.g., farm-to-school program). Schools have unparalleled potential to reach and impact children’s nutrition; such programs also have the potential to reach faculty and staff.  Federal, state and local policies and programs already influence what is served in schools, to whom, where it comes from, how it is handled, and many other aspects of the school food environment. Additional programs and policies can make the school food environment even more conducive to healthy eating.
