Oregon Farm to School and School Garden Policy Approach

Resources Required

Departments of agriculture and education coordinator positions:

Staff:

  • One FTE coordinator position in the department of agriculture.

  • The spending authority for the Oregon Farm to School and School Garden Program to fund one FTE coordinator position in the department of education.

Training: Coordinators participate in professional development opportunities such as those provided by the National Farm to School Network, School Food FOCUS, FoodCorps and regional organizations.

Funding: The Oregon Department of Agriculture’s Farm to School coordinator position was originally and continues to be funded from general funds.  The Oregon Department of Education’s Farm to School and School Garden coordinator position was funded from the department’s general funds during the first year (2009).  Until 2011, the USDA’s Child Nutrition Program funded half the position, while the state’s general funds provided the other half of the position.  As a result of the 2011 legislative session, the farm to school position is now 100% state funded. The $200,000 pilot program is funded through general funds distributed to the Oregon Department.

Other costs: National, state, or regional sources fund additional project costs
