Maternity Care Practices in the Hospital Setting

Programs that target maternity care practices, including educating hospital staff about breastfeeding, encouraging early breastfeeding initiation, and developing a written policy on breastfeeding, can be beneficial for encouraging breastfeeding and can take place prior to, during, and after labor. This strategy can apply to a range of settings including hospitals, clinics, and freestanding birth centers.  The strategy also includes several activities taking place during the intrapartum hospital stay, such as immediate prenatal care, care during labor and birthing, and postpartum care.
