Professional Support for Breastfeeding by Health Professionals

An intervention for pregnant women included three standard home visits (at 14, 20, and 28 weeks gestation) and additional brief home visits or telephone contacts by midwives as needed. Midwives provided general support and gave advice only when asked.

 

Breastfeeding and follow-up clinic can offer professional support services to women free of charge, though patients can be charged for supplies.  Services may include assisting with latch and positioning, checking the infant’s weight, counseling for mothers returning to work or school, and addressing the mother’s breastfeeding concerns.

 

Hospital-based breastfeeding clinic staffed by professionals and supervised by a lactation specialist may provide support to high-risk mothers.

 

Health plans may offer members lactation support services.
