Professional Support for Breastfeeding by Health Professionals

Overview

This strategy uses trained health professionals to provide support for breastfeeding to mothers during pregnancy and after returning home from the hospital. Support includes counseling and behavioral interventions to improve breastfeeding outcomes. Professional support is usually provided by physicians, nurses, lactation consultants, and other allied health professionals in-person or by telephone, individually or in a group, or in a clinic or home setting. Specific components include positive reinforcement, general guidance related to breastfeeding, managing lactation crises, and problem solving.
